KINGSTON >> A Hurley paramedic severely injured in a line-of-duty accident last year and a Woodstock rescue squad were among honorees this month at an awards and recognition dinner hosted by the Ulster County Emergency Medical Services Council.

William Spadafora of Mobile Life Support Services, who was honored as Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year at the May 16 dinner at the Benedictine Auditorium on Mary’s Avenue, was critically injured on May 18, 2013, when his ambulance collided head-on with a pickup truck on state Route 32 near the Rosendale-Ulster town line. Hospitalized for nearly two months, he came home last July 11.

Honored as Ulster County’s EMS Agency of the Year was the Woodstock Fire Department Rescue Squad.

The Ulster County EMS Council also honored the following individuals and agencies for their dedication to pre-hospital emergency medical care and extraordinary accomplishments:

• Joseph Orr of Mobile Life Support Services, Basic Life Support Provider of the Year.

• Victor Work of the Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Harriet C. Weber EMS Leadership Award.

• Aiden Henn of the town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Youth Provider of the Year.

• Susan McCarl of the Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, EMS Educator of Excellence

• Victoria Phillip of Ulster County 911 Communications, EMS Communication Specialist award.

• Beth Bagner of HealthAlliance Hospital, Kingston Campus, Registered Professional Nurse of Excellence.

• Heather Laskowski of Ellenville Regional Hospital, Registered Professional Nurse of Excellence

• Gene Epstein of Ellenville Regional Hospital, Physician Assistant of Excellence.

• Dr. Matthew Morgan of HealthAlliance Hospital, Kingston Campus, Physician of Excellence.

The Wallkill Ambulance and Esopus Ambulance/Fire were each awarded a unit citation for cardiac arrest saves.

Citizen lifesaving awards were presented to Nicole Saunders, Brian Vegliando, Julie McLaud, Amanda Murphy, Nick Panieleone, Michael Latino, Stephen Glen Ryther and Brittany Alexander for a successful cardiac arrest save at Wallkill High School. A citizen lifesaving award was also given to James Pittman for a successful cardiac arrest save on U.S. Route 9W.
