Ulster County Sheriff’s Office to hold snowmobile certification course

Posted: 08/24/14, 12:45 PM EDT |

KINGSTON >> The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office will sponsor a New York State Young Operators and Adult Certification Course for snowmobiles, Sheriff Paul J. VanBlarcum said Friday.

The course is required by state law for riders between the ages of 10 and 17. It is offered free of charge and is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Nov. 8 at the West Hurley Firehouse, 24 Wall St., West Hurley; on Nov. 15 at the Tillson Firehouse, 5 Tillson Rd.; and on Dec. 6 at the Milton Fire Company, 21 Main St., Milton.

The intent of the course is to instruct young snowmobilers in proper riding habits, safety equipment and laws and rules of the trail. The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Bureau of Marine and Recreational Vehicles prescribes this course. It is also available to adults.

Training is by certified instructors with more than 50 years of combined experience snowmobiling in both the U.S. and Canada.

A parent or guardian must accompany a child to the beginning of class to sign a state-required permission form.

Anyone interested in enrolling oneself or one’s child should contact the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office at (845) 340-3803skypec2c://r/204(845) 340-3803.

Pizza and soda will be provided free of charge, or bring a bag lunch.
